Review

Dubbed 'Sons Of Steel ...The Songs' this is the soundtrack to the cult Heavy Metal sci fi Cinema 100 movie released in the very late 80's produced & masterminded by Gary Lawrence Keady. Musicians comprise of the rhythm section from Rose Tattoo joined by Black Alice guitarist Jamie Page Trilogy / Black Steel) & vocalist Rob Hartley who also stars in the film itself, ironically playing out a bad ass character called Black Alice. Kicking of with a pulsating guitar & bass driven rendition of 'Something In The Air' which fires on all cylinders in the sonic department (listen to that drum sound) no doubt the result of a mammoth studio production job which is consistent throughout the entire record. Metal fans will appreciate Pages' axe work on the two instrumental showcases - the hard rocking The Burn and the aptly titled Walk In The Blues. Hartleys voice also gets an opportunity to shine on songs like Fighting For You and the title number Sons of Steel. Musically the majority of the tracks are hard rock & pop numbers obviously designed to complement the on screen cinematic action with the music interspersed by keyboards, female backing vocals and even upright bass (Walk In The Blues). Not the kind of stuff that will have you defiling graveyards but definitely something of prime value seeing that Heavy Metal sci fi movies are such a unique novelty.
